Anthony Russo New Head of Space-Based PNT National Coordination Office

Anthony Russo took up duties this week (January 19, 2010) as the director of the National Coordination Office (NCO) for Space-Based Positioning, Navigation, and Timing (PNT). The NCO provides the working staff for the National Space-Based PNT Executive Committee, drawing on representatives assigned from various federal agencies and departments.Russo previously served (until June 30, 2009) as NCO deputy director on assignment from the Department of Defense. He currently is a senior executive service (SES) official from the Research and Innovative Technology Administration (RITA) in the U.S. Department of Transportation.

Russo retired from military service as an Air Force colonel in October 2009. His expertise is in policy development, requirements definition, planning, and budgeting for space-based systems, including the Global Positioning System (GPS). He is the former commander of the 527th Space Aggressor Squadron, which identified potential threats and vulnerabilities to GPS service and built effective countermeasures.

His past assignments included leadership positions at Air Force Space Command, the Space Warfare Center, the Pentagon, and United States Strategic Command. 

He succeeds Mike Shaw, who left last year for a position with Lockheed Martin.
